Book Review: The Litigators by John Grisham

Before I read this novel, I read a review on Goodreads and this was aptly described as "romp". It is an enjoyable read.

The novel concerns a young lawyer who is on the treadmill in the back office and he, David Zinc, appears to flip one day and leaves his very well paid office. He heads to the local bar and gets very drunk then stumbles into a two bit law office of two ambulance chasers (I love that expression). His wife comes and collects him but he decides to join up with Figg and Finlay the down at heel lawyers.

He is led into the fantasy world of one of the lawyers and the firm is set up into a litigation that becomes increasingly difficult for them to win. They are clearly out of their depth but we enjoy the story along the way.

In parallel with this David takes on other cases too. However, it is the world of the two eccentric lawyers that we most enjoy as well as the courtroom scenes that are very well written.

A good book as ever from John Grisham but not quite the best.

8/10 for me.

Book Review: Theodore Boone the Abduction by John Grisham

This is the follow on from the first Theodore Boone novel but it can be read as a stand alone I would say. However to read them back to back is better as you get to know the characters. Grisham's writing style is pleasant and reading his novels has always been easy. Although these novels featuring Theo Boone may be aimed at a younger market they are perfectly readable for adults too.

However this novel was not the greatest of adventures. I enjoyed the glimpse into the American way of life but the story is a little lacking in excitement and danger for me. The first novel was a lot better. If John Grisham continues with these novels then I hope that it will be a bit more interesting than this one.

I look forward to his next adult novel that comes out before the end of 2011 but for me this novel is only a 6/10.

Book Review: The Confession by John Grisham

Love John Grisham's novels. As ever this is set in the legal world as well as involving the questions of race and guilt and innocence.

An innocent man is just a few days away from being executed and it turns out that a dying man is actually guilty of the murder. The clock is ticking faster than normal for the innocent man Donte Drumm.

The guilty man is dying of a tumour and he confesses to a priest that he killed the girl Drumm is serving time for. Will the priest be able to travel cross country to the scene of the crime and convince the authorities to stop the execution. The guilty man keeps going AWOL and the priest struggles to keep on track in his quest for justice and to stop the execution.

Will he get there in time? You will just have to read the book!

9/10 for me for this novel.

Recommended Author John Grisham

I love all of John Grisham's novels and I am completely up to date (pending another one coming out this year 2011) with reading these. Very much page turners usually set around a court case. They have made some very nice films of such novels as the Firm, the Pelican Brief and the Rainmaker. You will really enjoy reading his thrillers.

 

There are other books that John Grisham has written that are a little more off of the mainstream thriller track. His Playing for Pizza was wonderful, a nice cosy book set in Italy. Also the novel A Painted House was delightful to read, a thriller but not very conventional, I think it is his best.

I cannot wait for the next John Grisham novel, Theodore Boone and the Abduction that is out in the UK on 07 June 2011.
